James Artz Obituary

James "Jim" Samuel Artz, 89, of Louisa, peacefully passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, John, and Anna Artz; and his grandmother, Mimi Cayton, to whom he was very close. Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather (Gran), and a friend to many.

After earning a bachelor's degree from Shepherd University and a master's degree in physical education from the University of Virginia, Jim pursued a career in education. Over a 30-year span, he taught and coached in Harrisonburg, VA, and in the counties of Shenandoah, Louisa, Culpepper, and Prince William, earning him a special place in hearts of many. As a beloved football coach at Gar-Field Senior High School, his players were like family to him. In addition, he was a steadfast employee at Giant Food Store for 25 years. After retiring to the town of Louisa, VA, Jim served eight years as mayor and an additional seven years as a council member. Among his passions were coaching, mentoring, golfing, reading, and providing for his family.

Family left to cherish his memory include his wife of 69 years, Vizanah "Vi" Artz; children, Jimmy Artz, Jr., Mitzi Morrison (Don), Patsy Emmons (Ron), and Bobby Artz (Melanie); sister, Suzie Grimes (Tommy); grandchildren, Britany Marvin (Richard) and Jacob Morrison (Maddy); great-grandchildren, Isaac, Lincoln, and Logan Marvin; niece, Becki Grimes Sisk; sister-in-law, Jane Rhodes (John); and many dear friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to James River Home Health and Hospice or the Louisa Rescue Squad.

I was so sad to hear of Jim's passing. I worked with him at Gar-Field High School for many years. Not only was he a "funny" man, he was also one of the nicest people you could ever know. I will miss him.
